Preparing for the appointment
Some families choose to speak with us in advance through a quality-of-life and end-of-life planning consultation with our registered veterinary nurse, Jo. These conversations give you space to talk through your pet’s comfort, discuss any changes you may be noticing, and explore whether the time may be approaching if you’re unsure. They can also help you understand what to expect and feel more prepared before the visit.
Before the appointment itself, you may wish to choose a quiet, comfortable place where your pet feels most at ease — this could be their favourite bed, a sofa, or even a spot in the garden if the weather allows. You’re welcome to have family members, children, or other pets present if that feels right for you.
Ahead of the appointment, we’ll send you electronic consent forms to read and sign. We recommend completing these in advance if possible, as this allows the visit itself to remain calm, unhurried, and fully focused on your pet.
If you’re unable to complete the forms beforehand, please don’t worry — we can go through everything together and complete consent on the day. We’ll always make sure you feel comfortable, informed, and supported before proceeding.
There is no “right” way to prepare — only what feels right for you and your pet.
Our aim is always to ensure the experience feels as calm and supported as possible for both you and your pet.
What to expect on the day
When the vet arrives, we’ll take time to talk everything through and answer any questions you may have. Nothing is rushed.
Your pet will first be given a gentle sedative to help them relax and drift into a deep, peaceful sleep. You can stay with them throughout.
Once your pet is fully asleep, the vet will administer the final medication, allowing them to pass away quietly and pain-free. We will always explain what is happening and ensure you feel supported and informed.
Afterwards, you may spend as much time as you need with your pet.
Aftercare
If you choose for Whispaws to arrange aftercare, your pet will be treated with the utmost respect and dignity.

Options include:
• Individual cremation with our trusted crematorium partner, King’s Hill
• Return of ashes (if chosen), usually within around one week, although occasionally this may take a little longer
• Keepsakes such as paw prints, jewellery and fur clippings

If you prefer, you are also welcome to collect your pet’s ashes directly from the crematorium (CV13 6DD - by appointment). Some families find this comforting, and it may allow you to receive the ashes sooner.

If you’re unsure about aftercare, we can talk everything through on the day and give you time to decide.

Whispaws personally oversees the process and ensures your pet’s ashes are returned safely and respectfully.
Important Information
Whispaws provides planned euthanasia visits, not emergency or out-of-hours care.
If your pet’s condition deteriorates suddenly or becomes an emergency, we recommend contacting your regular veterinary practice in the first instance. If further support is needed, we work in collaboration with Wilson’s Vets, who are able to provide emergency and out-of-hours care. You may have to take your pet into the practice for the quickest care.

If you’re unsure - It’s okay to have doubts, questions, or mixed emotions — this is completely normal.
If you’re feeling unsure, have questions, or would like support in making decisions ahead of time, we also offer end-of-life discussions and planning appointments. These can be booked in advance to talk things through at your own pace and help you feel prepared when the time comes.
If you decide not to proceed on the day, we will support you with kindness and understanding.
You’re never rushed, and you’re never alone in this decision.

Frequently Asked Questions
1 / Will my pet feel pain?
No. The process is designed to be peaceful and pain-free. Your pet will be fully sedated and asleep before the final medication is given.
2 / Can I stay with my pet?
Yes — absolutely. You are welcome to stay with your pet throughout, for as long as you wish but if you prefer not to, that is ok too.
3 / Can children or other pets be present?
Yes, if that feels right for your family. We’re happy to talk through what to expect so you can prepare children in an age-appropriate way.
4 / Will there be any movement or reactions?
In most cases, pets pass very peacefully. Occasionally, there may be natural reflexes or changes in breathing — we’ll explain this beforehand so you know what is normal and what to expect.
5 / What if my pet reacts to the injection?
Very occasionally, pets may briefly flinch or vocalise when an injection is given, just as it can sting slightly for us. We do everything possible to minimise discomfort and keep your pet calm and soothed at all times.
6 / How long does the appointment take?
We allow plenty of time and never rush. The length of the visit varies, but we will always move at your pace. On average, an appointment lasts for about an hour.
7 / What if I change my mind?
That’s okay. If you feel unsure at any point, we can pause, talk, or decide together what feels right.
8 / Is this an emergency service?
No. Whispaws provides planned in-home euthanasia.
If your pet needs urgent care outside our opening hours, please contact your regular vet, or an emergency provider or our partner practice Wilson's vets in Dordon.
9 / How do I book?
You can book via our website or get in touch directly via WhatsApp if you’d like to talk first. We’re always happy to answer questions before you make any decisions.
A final word
Every effort is made by the vets at Whispaws to ensure your pet’s passing is as peaceful and gentle as possible.
In rare cases, pets may respond unexpectedly to medication, and this is something that can happen despite the utmost care and compassion being given.
If you have any questions, worries, or simply need reassurance, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re here to support you — with honesty, kindness, and respect.
